The Astral galleon seen from the street in Puerto Banús: a timber hull with masts, rigging and cream awnings against a blue sky.

A cocktail bar inside a wooden galleon.

Built on the quay where Puerto Banús begins. A mahogany bar under a stained-glass ceiling, two decks, and around a hundred cocktails made with fruit cut that morning.

What Astral is

There are a lot of cocktail bars in Marbella. There is one that is a ship. Astral opened in 2002 and has been at the entrance to Puerto Banús ever since — the same hull, the same bar, a drinks list that gets rewritten several times a year.

The ship

A full-size timber galleon with masts, rigging, portholes and a carved prow, standing on the quay rather than in the water. Nobody walks past without looking up.

The cocktails

Fresh fruit, juice pressed in the bar, sorbets and syrups made in house. The garnish on a piña colada takes about as long as the drink itself.

The deck

Open from ten in the morning for coffee and juice. By ten at night the lanterns are lit, the rigging glows red and it is a completely different place.

The long mahogany bar inside Astral, lit by a ceiling of red, yellow, blue and green stained glass, with trays of pineapples and bananas behind.
The bar, under the glass ceiling.

The venue

It isn't a theme. It's the actual building.

The bar top is one long slab of mahogany. The ceiling above it is panelled in coloured glass, so the light on the counter changes colour through the day. Outside there are masts, rigging nets and a riveted steel arch you walk through to reach the upper deck.

Everything on the site was built for this one address, and most of it has been here since 2002.

The cocktails

Four things, and nothing hidden.

Fresh fruit, spirits, natural ingredients and ice. That has been the whole method since the bar opened — it just happens to be done at a scale most places wouldn't attempt.

Some of it is showing off. Most of it is just the way the drink is supposed to arrive — smoked, torched, fanned out or carried under a glass cloche.

Two bars, one address

Morning coffee and a two-in-the-morning deck.

The upper deck in daylight: timber tables, blue railings, cream awnings and a riveted orange arch.
Daytime. Shade, timber tables, the marina below and the mountains behind. Juices, coffee, a long lunch-time cocktail.
The deck at night, packed with people, lit by green uplights, an amber lantern and red-lit rigging.
After dark. Lanterns, green uplighting through the planting, the painted glass panel above the gangway lit from behind.
